WARNING: This WhatsApp text will HACK your account within seconds
Beware, you have been warned.
There is a scam text circulating around WhatsApp that can hack your account within seconds.
It is easy to spot the scam. However, it is even easier to fall for it!
So, what is this scam?
What happens is that you receive a text message from Whatsapp with a login code.
The login code is part of the two-factor authentication of Whatsapp as it proves you’re currently in possession of the number.
So, after receiving the text message with the Whatsapp login code, you will receive a Whatsapp message from one of your contacts.
The Whatsapp message will say something along the lines of: “Hey! I accidentally sent you my WhatsApp login code. Could you send it back to me, please?”
REMEMBER, DO NOT REPLY TO THIS MESSAGE.
What is happening here is that a stranger has hacked the account of the contact that sent you this Whatsapp message.
The stranger is trying to log into your account, but he/she needs to verify your account via two-factor authentication.
So, the stranger is asking you for the login code sent by Whatsapp on your text messages.
If you send the code to the stranger, he/she will take over your account and boot you out.
The stranger can then misuse your Whatsapp account and even use the same scam to hack the contacts on your phone.
This scam is easy to fall for as you are being requested by one of your contacts, which usually is a family member or a friend, for a favor.
As the ‘favor’ seemingly seems small and easy, you fulfill it and then end up getting hacked.
In Pakistan, where people are not digitally aware and forward anything on Whatsapp without verification, this scam is sure to cause havoc among the country’s netizens.
