With Afzal Kohistani’s murder ends his heroic fight against honour killing – who holds the torch now?

The whistleblower of Kohistan video scandal, Afzal Kohistani’s fight for justice ends with his life. He was gunned down in Abbottabad on Wednesday evening. Two passersby also got injured in the attack.

According to Abbottabad Police, Afzal Kohistani was attacked by unidentified men near Gami Adda in Abbottabad on Children’s Hospital Road. He, along with the injured, was shifted to DHQ (District Headquarters Hospital), where he succumbed to his wounds.

Kohistani was the lone pursuer fighting for justice in this case. A few days before his murder, he wrote to Hazara Deputy Inspector General and Mansehra District Police Officer, requesting them to provide him security since he was getting life threats.

Kohistani is recognized for his fights against honour killing in Pakistan. It was him who blew the whistle in 2012 that how five girls were murdered only for enjoying a wedding festival. He exposed how the video of five girls clapping while his brothers danced during a wedding went viral. Later, the girls were killed on the directives of the local jirga.

The news shocked the country and pushed the Supreme Court to take Suo Moto notice. A year later, three of his brothers were also killed. After losing his brothers, the man who started the campaign to expose some of Pakistan’s most hideous honour killing cases and bringing it to national attention is silenced forever as well.

His house was firebombed and destroyed for breaching the local code but he did not step back. Speaking to BBC, Kohistani said that he will not step back unless justice is served to the woman and his brothers.

”Justice will only be done when killers of the women and of my brothers will be sentenced. Only then can we expect an end to honour and reprisal killings in Kohistan” – said Kohistani

Social media community expressed their greed and anger over his murder, saying that despite him repeatedly asking for security, he was not protected.
