In an unfortunate incident, depicting the crumbling institution of marriage in Pakistan which is plagued with insensitivity and manipulation, a woman took her own life because she could not give birth. The 25-year-old ended her life because of a family dispute in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Dera Ismail Khan district yesterday (i.e Sunday).

The young woman, in the limits of Paharpur Police Station, committed suicide by drinking poison because she was being constantly mentally tortured by her father in law for failing to give birth despite being married for four years.

The police handed over the dead body to her family after postmortem. She was taken to the hospital after she consumed poison but could not survive for more than a few hours.

The recent alarming rise in the number of suicide cases and murder cases have indicated that they are linked with domestic abuse and general dissatisfaction with marital relationships. There are countless reasons that can serve as the reason for it, however, the most significant reasons still remain forced marriages, lack of mutual respect and harmony, son seeking, pressurizing women to give birth without a choice, women being treated as an agency of men etc.
