World Bank Country Director criticizes Dawn News for publishing ‘contradictory’ articles on KPEC

Recently, the director tweeted and said the Dawn recently published two contradictory articles on the “Khyber Pass Economic Corridor Project”.

  • The title of the first article was “Planning Commission terms Khyber Pass Project ‘road to nowhere’”.
  • It was also mentioned in the first article that “the project is not economically viable.”
  • On the other hand, the second article contradicts the previous, and it was all praise about the KPEC project.

Dawn

Illango,  World Bank’s Country Director for Pakistan, recently tweeted that Dawn recently published two contradictory articles on the “Khyber Pass Economic Corridor Project” – one containing erroneous/incorrect information and facts.

First Article

The first article was published on September 23, 2019, and the title of the article was “Planning Commission terms Khyber Pass Project ‘road to nowhere’”.

The article said the project has no economic and technical value. It further said, “by keeping in mind the limited freight traffic the construction of the four-lane motorway on new alignment is not justified having a very unit cost of Rs655 million per km”.

It was also mentioned in the article that the project is not economically viable.

Second Article

On the other hand, the second article published on December 13, 2019, contradicts the previous, as it was all praise about the KPEC project.

“The corridor will not only facilitate the commercial traffic and expand economic activities between Pakistan and Afghanistan, but also promote private sector development along the corridor,” says article.

The article further stated that more than 100,000 will get jobs in KP due to this project.

The response of the writer:

While responding to the country director, the writer of the article says that ”strangely, a lender is defending a controversial project instead of the government. Is there any stake? How many examples are in the past?”

“And criticizing a journalist/newspaper is typical of viceroy attitude.  I/Dawn didn’t self-create information like your majesty’s fact-sheet but reported honestly a viewpoint of a relevant institution,” says writer.
