Health-emergency: Zantac found to have cancer-causing agents!

The drug contains an impurity in a very low level.

As per health regulators around the globe, including the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), has announced that there is a possibility that Ranitidine (Zantac), a stomach drug consumed by millions of people, could include a cancer-causing component. As per the FDA, the source of this contamination is under observation.

Ranitidine is a member of H2 (histamine-2) blockers, this class of medicine works by hindering histamine receptors in the stomach, as a result decreasing the production of stomach acid. It is used to treat and prevent conditions that are caused by excess in stomach acid, like ulcers and heartburn.

However, it has been found that the drug sold under the name ‘Zantac’, which is also known as Ranitidine, contains an impurity in a very low level, N- nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA). This is identified as a possible human carcinogen (a substance that can cause cancer), as per U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

A number of blood pressure drugs have been under observation after traces of NDMA were found. Earlier in 2019, when Torrent Pharmaceuticals and Camber Pharmaceutical said they would evoke the products that contain losartan.

The probe came after Valisure, which is an online pharmacy company that conducts tests on all medications that it distributes, notified the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that high amount of NDMA was detected in both brand and generic versions of Zantac sold at major pharmacies.

“There’s no acceptable cancer risk for a drug like this,” – Said Light, Valisure CEO.

Zantac is consumed by all age groups, including adults and children. It is given to infants suffering from reflux in a syrup form, which requires a prescription.

Any patient, who is consuming the drug, can ask questions about their current ongoing treatment from their pharmacist or doctor. There are a number of other medicines that can be used as a substitute to Ranitidine, people that are using it on prescription or OTC can switch to the alternative.
